911 Monument
Over the years we have heard much about the devastating loss of human life in the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Towers in New York City, but rarely have we heard about the loss of canine life on that tragic day. Many canine officers and their human partners poured over the wreckage for days and weeks in the hopes of finding life or of bringing closure to those who had lost loved ones in that terrible act.
In an attempt to honour those officers, both human and canine, the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society along with officers from the Port Authority of New York City and New Jersey dedicated the 9/11 monument on May 11th 2002 in Beautiful Joe Park in Meaford. The Society and Town of Meaford wished to say thank you to one canine officer "Sirius" a Labrador retriever who lost his life on that day. His partner Officer David Lim unveiled the statue with emotion and gratitude for the special effort the Society had taken to remember his partner and friend.
As a thank you to all for remembering Sirius, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey sent an iron cross, fashioned from a section of beam from the World Trade Center Towers, to be mounted on the front of the statue in the Park. We will always treasure the memory of this canine officer Sirius, as well as all officers, canine or human who have lost their lives in the conduct of their duty.
