Beautiful Joe - The Story

Celebrating more than 125 years - Originally published in 1894!

Beautiful Joe - the bookIn 1892, in the town of Meaford, Ontario, Margaret Marshall Saunders was introduced to Beautiful Joe –a mongrel dog that had been cruelly mutilated by his owner. The author was inspired to write this story in 1893, based on true events to emphasize the plight of domestic animals everywhere. Beautiful Joe has received worldwide attention, has appeared in several editions, and has been translated in at least 10 different languages - including braille. It was the first Canadian children's book to sell over a million copies, and sold over 7 million books by the late 1930's.

When in Meaford, buy your copy of Beautiful Joe or the sequel Beautiful Joe's Paradise at these locations whose sales directly benefit the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society:  Meaford Museum, This 'n That, Czech It Out, Canadian Pet Connection and Meaford Hall.
